Brancott Sauvignon Blanc

One of the oldest wineries in the relatively young wine region of New Zealand, Brancott was the first to establish large scale grape growing and planted the first vineyard in Marlborough, a then-traditional sheep farming area that is now one of the most important and successful Sauvignon Blanc-growing regions in New Zealand.

Brancott sources grapes for its Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot and Pinot Noir varietal wines from its Marlborough vineyards on the northeastern tip of the South Island. The cool climate puts this region at the lower end of the temperature spectrum for the major grape growing regions of the world. What’s also unique to this region is its abundant sunshine and relatively dry summer. The soil, derived from glacial outwash material, is silt loam overlaying gravels and rocks. These combined factors support a slow ripening process and result in fruit with crisp acidity and intense, distinctive, regional flavors.

When the first vintage of Brancott Vineyard’s Sauvignon Blanc was produced in 1980, its distinctive, clean and crisp flavors were highly praised. Those wineries that were skeptical of wine-growing success in Marlborough in the seventies saw the light and began planting their own vineyards. Brancott’s visionary efforts were rewarded in 1990 when it became the first New Zealand winery to win the prestigious Marquis de Goulaine Trophy for “The Best Sauvignon Blanc in the World” at the International Wine and Spirit competition in London. This drew attention to New Zealand wines and helped unlock the door to the global market for many other New Zealand wines.

In addition to Sauvignon Blanc, look for Brancott’s Chardonnay, and Reserve Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. LW carries an extensive selection of other wines from New Zealand. Feel free to ask next time you’re in—we’d be happy to help you explore the world of wines Down Under.
